Why you keep falling off
How to overcome your triggers.
You finally started working towards your goals and quit your bad habits.
You’ve been consistent and you’re making good progress.
Then one day you slip and slide right back to square one.
I get it
I know that process all too well.
Take my fat loss journey for example.
It took me 7 years to lose weight for good as I kept falling off.
7 years of ups and downs.
Now though, I’ve been at a healthy body fat percentage for two years.
What changed?
Triggers
Let’s first talk about triggers.
Triggers can be anything that triggers a behaviour or response.
There are two types: internal and external.
External triggers are things in your environment that trigger a certain behaviour.
Like your doorbell ringing triggering you to go to the door.
Internal triggers are things like emotions that trigger a certain behaviour.
Like feeling bored so you unlock your phone.
Examples of External Triggers
Anything can be a trigger, and they can be different for everyone.
Here are three that I remember having.
Apps: I had UberEats and Deliveroo installed on my phone. Seeing those apps was a trigger. I’d see those apps, and think of my favourite fast food, causing me to make an order and cheat on my diet.
Friends: I used to vape, and so did my friends. I quit multiple times, but the people around me didn’t, so I never quit for long. Being around vapers triggered me to vape.
TV: Watching TV is a waste of time, but I also developed a habit of snacking whilst I did. Watching TV then became a trigger for me to snack.
How triggers make you fall off
It’s the snowball effect.
There wouldn't be much of an issue if a trigger only triggered the behaviour once.
But usually, that behaviour triggers another behaviour, another, then another, and so on.
The smallest of triggers can cause you to snowball out of control.
The behaviours are automatic, you might not even be aware of what you’re doing.
One thing leads to the next and the next thing you know, you’ve lost all progress.
Overcoming Triggers
So, how do you overcome those triggers? Remove them.
Delete those apps, get rid of those friends, and sell your TV if you have to.
You can try to leave those triggers in place and rely solely on willpower to get you through.
But at the start, doing so is very difficult.
Your best option, until you learn to become more mindful, is to remove those triggers.
Takeaway
Become aware of your triggers, identify them, and remove any that you can.
